How to Choose Temporary Nest in Labuan Bajo?

On July 17, 2016 by Novita Karana

flight-scheduleLabuan Bajo, a gate to Komodo National Park hides some hidden gems that waiting to be revealed. Not only komodo sailing live on board trip, the area has some nice spots. I will write some hidden gems of Labuan Bajo in next blogpost. That’s why we have to spend night in Labuan Bajo at least 1 night.

How to get to Labuan Bajo?
For the convenience way, i suggest to take flight with detail above.
And then, upon arrival in Komodo Airport Labuan Bajo, you can take taxi, cost Rp. 50.000/car/transfer to central area. You will meet lots of taxi driver at arrival gate. The transfer rate on May was Rp.50.00/car/transfers. The taxi is just a car without branding like in Jakarta. Usually the car has 6 seats like APV, Xenia, Avanza.
For the celullar provider that works in Labuan Bajo is Telkomsel. All cellular provider is no service.

And then, how to choose the temporary nest in Labuan Bajo?
In my opinion, it depends the atmosphere that you want. Labuan Bajo is splited into 3 areas:
a) Area Central
This is my favourite area and  also the most lively area in Labuan Bajo. You can see line of homestays, hotel, coffee shops, travel agents, dive centers, cake shops, mini markets, warongs, laundry, car rental, motorbike rental. From central area to culinary area takes 20 minutes walking. The advantage of this area: 1) near harbour, i met some divers who walking from dive center at central area to the harbour 2) you can enjoy the sunset from your window room or just sit at coffee shop around there.
b) Area Culinary
This area located near Kampung Ujung Culinary, at Soekarno Hatta street, very ideal for those who want to have fresh sea food dinner by walking distance.
c) Area Resort / Quiet Area
This area located far from central, usually takes 20-45 minutes to reach from airport/central area. This area suits for honeymooners, or those who adore silent and quiet atmosphere. Some of the accommodation are: La Prima (beach front), Sylvia Komodo (beach front), Bintang Flores, Jayakarta (beach front).

Range homestay and hotel rate in Labuan Bajo
Tent with fan: start from Rp. 100.000 – Rp. 110.000/person/night (exclude breakfast)
Homestay room with fan : start from Rp. 120.000 – Rp. 150.000/room/night (exclude breakfast)
Homestay room with AC : start from Rp. 300.000 – Rp. 500.000/room/night (include simple breakfast)
Hotel room with TV, breakfast buffet, AC : start from Rp. 750.000 – Rp. 1.250.000/room/night (include buffet breakfast)

I prefer area central and area culinary to stay. When stayed 7 days in Labuan Bajo around May 2016, we did homestay hoping from one place to another. There’re 7 places that we tried. Tired? Of course. Can you imagine you have to unload the clothes and then packed again in the morning, everyday. It totally homeworks for us with 35L carrier. :D From the hype well-known instagramable homestay to boutique hostel. We tried some of them.

I did some reviews based on my experiences to these accommodations:
1) Bajo View (Fan Tents only) Rp. 100.000 – Rp. 110.000/person
2) Manta Manta Homestay (Fan Room only) Rp. 150.000/room
3) Siola Homestay (AC and Fan) Rp. 120.000/room
4) Bajo Beach Hotel (AC Room and Fan Room) Rp. 300.000/room

5) Green Hill Boutique Hotel (AC Room only) Rp. 450.000/room
6) Komodo Lodge by Grand Komodo (AC Room only) Rp. 500.000/room
7) La Prima (AC Room only) Rp. Rp. 750.000/room

For traveller who choose room with fan, i recommend to try Manta Manta Homestay.
For traveller who choose room with AC, i recommend to try Komodo Lodge
For traveller who choose room with AC, pool, breakfast buffet, TV, i recommend to try La Prima

I also see some homestays and hotels that also nice:
1) L Bajo Hotel: newest hotel in Labuan Bajo (May 2016), located at Jl. Kasimo 99, beside Garuda Indonesia office. Always fully booked.
Website: www.lbajohotel.com
Phone: 0385-42141
Rate: AC Room Rp. 425.000/room/night. Fan Room Rp.200.000/room/night
2) Orange homestay, located at area culinary, near laundry and italian cafe.
Rate: AC Room Rp. 250.000/room/night. Fan Room Rp.150.000/room/night
3) CF Komodo: located far from central area and culinary area. You need to rent motorbike to explore the area.
Rate: AC Room Rp.280.000/room/night (via booking.com per May 2016)
4) Le Pirate: usually also fully booked when you walk in
Rate: AC Room Rp. 400.000 – Rp.550.000/room/night (sometimes they changed the rate on high season)

IMG_2515 1) Bajo View (Fan Tents only)
My score: 6/10

Website: http://www.bajoview.com/
Address: Jalan Soekarno Hatta Gang Bajo View No 02 Kampung Tengah/Puncak Waringin, Labuan Bajo
Phone: 0821-4681-6321
Rate: We booked from booking, com. The walk in rate and internet booking rate was same.
For tent with ocean view: Rp. 110.000/person (May 2016) without breakfast
For tent without view (the view is another tent): Rp. 100.000/person (May 2016) without breakfast

Review for Bajo View:
IMG_2514Location
Bajo View located in the heart of Bajo village, near the touristic main road, Jl. Soekarno Hatta, where all dive centres, tour operators, restaurants, and cafe located. To reach the hotel, enter small street name Gang Bajo, and you have to trek uphill for 8-10 minutes. After found the owl sign, turn left. You will find the receptionist room. If you travelling with suitcase, forget this place. Bajo View suits for single traveller who love trekking, travel with carrier, and don’t mind to trek uphill. If you travel couple, i suggest to choose homestay with room near Soekarno Hatta street.
The Wooden Deck
Upon arrive at Bajo View, you will find yourself in reception area and open air wooden deck with Labuan Bajo Port view. My favourite part is this wooden deck. Enjoy sunset while sipping your cold juice was something awesome.
IMG_2482The Room
The rooms come with colouful tents. Smell so adventure, right? This concept made us decide to give a try stay one night here. We want to feel night in tent. The tents located below the wooden deck and receptionist area. Follow the stairs down and you will find the colourful tents. They said they have 26 tents. 6 tents with ocean view located in higher level, and the others has no view (the tents face each other). With size 2meter x 2 meter x 2 meter, these contemporary half cylinder tents made from durable fabric and steel framings with a zipper to close the front cover. After check in, the staff will accompany you to your tent and give you padlock and key. You can lock your tent when you leave.

And the view from your front cover tent costs Rp.110.000/person will be like this:

The Bed and Interior
The level of the sleep quality here is 6/10.
We got one super mini fan, one super mini pillow for one person (is this a joke?),  single bed that feel hard (they called it futon), 2 electric plugs and hangers. They don’t provide blanket and towel. I repeat, no blanket and towel. So if you decide to stay here, remember to bring sarong, towel, soap, shampoo, and extention electricity plug. We slept and left the front cover open. It’s a little bit hot when the front cover zipped.
IMG_2505The Bathroom
They have 2 public sinks and 8 public bathrooms with Western style: cold shower and seat toilet. The bathroom located on the left side, same level with tents without view. Do you see green doors on pic above? Yes, those are the bathrooms. They don’t provide soap and shampoo. I read the text written near the sink, inform the water only runs from 10AM to 10PM. But, i showered on 10PM and the cold water still running.
The Internet
They have quite fast internet access.
The Breakfast
You can order buy breakfast at the reception area. One person cost around Rp. 30.000 – 40.000.
We didn’t try the breakfast here. Homemade food at Soekarno Hatta street absolutely tastes better.
Tips
If you decide to stay here, don’t forget to bring: backpack instead of suitcase (remember the 10 minutes trek uphill), sarong for blanket, towel, soap, shampoo, extention electricity plug.
And, ask for tent that far from toilet. I think tent near toilet will be noisy and stinky.
